What is a Class B Sterilizer? 

A Class B Sterilizer (such as the Bravo 21V which is in operation at Clearbrook Dental) is a high level steam sterilizer that uses a vacuum pump to remove air/steam mixtures from the chamber prior to sterilization cycle beginning . This process can remove 99% of the air inside of the chamber before the temperature and pressure increases to it’s necessary parameters. This dynamic air removal provides the necessary conditions to sterilize any load type, including porous or hollow materials, products in pouches, textiles and hollow items like wands, turbines, handpieces and tips.
According to the Public Health of Ontario Dynamic Air Removal Sterilizers (Class B) are the preferred method of sterilization.

What is the difference between a Class B and Class N Sterilizer?

The main difference between a Class B and Class N (Gravity Displacement Sterilizer) is the way the air removed from the chamber prior to sterilization beginning. This essentially determines what type of instruments/material or items can be sterilized adequately in a Class B sterilizer vs a Class N Sterilizer. These sterilizers use the steam generated from a boiler/steam generator to create a downward displacement, thus pushing out the air in the chamber prior to the sterilization cycle beginning. This method of air removal uses the steam to eliminate the air in the chamber and depending on the method used to expel the air, does not ensure complete removal of air particularly from hollow or porous instruments. A Class B sterilizer on the other hand, with the help of a vacuum pump is able to provide more complete air removal from the most difficult load types before the sterilization cycle begins. With the help of the vacuum pump, the complete air removal from the chamber allows better penetration of steam into difficult load types to ensure the load is 100% properly sterilized before use. This makes the Class B sterilizer the most versatile small, effective, and compact tabletop sterilizer type on the market that is able to efficiently and effectively sterilizer any load type used in the dental, medical, podiatry, chiropodist, tattoo and veterinary markets.
